Citizenship Information Regarding The USCIS N400 Form

When you decide to become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, the process does not happen overnight. There are definite rules that must be followed and obeyed in order to be approved for citizenship. One of the most important and key elements in the naturalization process is properly filling out the USCIS n400 form. In order to even be able to apply for citizenship in the US, you must have lived inside of the United States for a minimum of 5 years total. You are allowed to live outside of the US for no more than 6 months every year, not to exceed that amount.

This form contains all of the questions that need to be answered in order to be considered for naturalization into the United States. A significant fee accompanies this form. There is a $595 fee in addition to an $80 biometrics fee for a total of $675. If you are over the age of 75 years old, you are not required to send in the $80 biometric fee. If you are in the military and are filing under INA section number 328 or 329, you are not charged any fee. An additional fingerprinting fee may be added, but every state’s fees for this purpose vary.

This form runs the gamut of questions from original citizenship to personal beliefs about the United States of America. The form will ask for your birth name and if you wish to change your name at this time. Many people opt to have a more “Americanized” name when migrating over from another country. You will give your desired name request at this time. You will be asked to provide physical attributes from the FBI to run a background check. They will ask your hair color, eye color and ethnicity. You must list the exact address of every place you have lived in the United States over the last 5 years. It is important to always keep records of items such as these. The same will be asked of your employment record. You will answer questions about your marital status and the citizenship of your spouse as well as questions regarding your children and their citizenship as well.
