Applying For Naturalisation In The United States
If you wish to become a citizen of the United States, you need to fill out the necessary naturalisation paperwork. Applying for naturalisation is a relatively simple process but cannot take place at all unless you have been a permanent resident in the country for a minimum of 5 years time. Until that has occurred, you will not be approved for citizenship. You mist be living on actual American soil for a minimum of 6 months every year (not a day over that) in order to be considered for naturalisation approval.
When you make the decision to apply for US citizen ship, you must fill out a USCIS n-400 form for consideration. This form contains questions that must be answered honestly and fully, so it is extremely important to have all of the necessary paperwork on hand to answer these questions to the best of your ability. These questions will consist of asking for the exact address of any and every home you have lived in over the last 5 years as well as the names, address and phone numbers of all of your places of employment over the same period of time. You will be asked on the form if you would like to change your name legally to a more “Americanized” moniker. If you answered yes, you will be asked to state your new desired name on the form at that time.
When you are applying for naturalisation, you will also be asked to give specific details about your looks including ethnicity, hair color and eye color. You will be required to submit two photographs of yourself and you must get fingerprinted by a valid agency. These requirements are necessary for the FBI to run a background check, which is standard for all people applying for citizenship. Once you have submitted your paperwork, dotted all of your I’s and crossed all of your t’s, you will get a letter in the mail from the naturalisation department with their decision on your request. If you are approved for citizenship, you will now be asked to come in and take the oath and pledge your allegiance to the United States of America. If there is a question on your form, you will be placed on a continuation status until the matter can be resolved. There is a possibility that your application may be denied. There are many reasons for this such as not being truthful on the information you filled out or not living in the country for the appropriate amount of time. If these issues can be cleared up, you will be allowed to reapply to citizenship at a later date.
