Rules To Know When Applying For US Citizenship
There are many people living today in the United States of America without being allowed the freedom to many choices that most of us take for granted on a daily basis, due to the fact that they are not US citizens. If you love this country and want to have a part in the decision making of the United States of America, applying for citizenship is the first place you should start. The process of citizenship is actually called naturalization. Once you receive your naturalization, you will be allowed the freedom to vote in the US elections, you can participate in and receive federal programs such as social security, you will be allowed the right to carry a US passport, and you can qualify for certain security clearance.
This process is not a 1-2-3, you’re done type of thing. You are required to live as a legal permanent resident of the United States for a minimum of 5 years before you can apply for naturalization. This is for your benefit as much as it is for the government who invests time and money into you naturalization process. During your minimum 5 year life in the US, you cannot live away from the US for more that 6 months at a time. Rules, such as marriage to a legal US citizen can alter the rules of naturalization.
Applying for citizenship in the US is a fairly simple, but long process. If the rules are followed, the process will be generally painless. To qualify for citizenship, you must be a permanent and lawful US resident who is over the age of 18 years old. You must live in the state you filed your petition for citizenship in for no less than 3 months. You must be physically present on United States soil for a minimum of 1.5 years with absences no longer than 6 months at a time. You are a good person with decent moral character while maintaining your 5 years of residency. Unless you are over the age of 55 years old or a permanent resident in the United States for more than 20 years, you must have an elementary level of reading and writing English and you must know the basic fundamentals and knowledge of the government of the US and its history. You will be tested on such questions as US president names and known facts of US history on your naturalization test.
